Bao wakes up in a misty forest. The bamboo is tall and green. They shuffle to their favorite spot and settle in for breakfast. The world is quiet. Then a small bird lands on their head. Bao does not move. The bird chirps. Bao takes another bite. They have an understanding.

A rustle in the leaves breaks the peace. Bao looks up. Something is moving in the trees — something that does not belong in this forest. Bao stands slowly. The bird flies away. And Bao takes one step toward the sound.

Bao lives in a sanctuary. Today a group of children is visiting. They press their hands to the glass. Bao lumbers over and sits right in front of them. One child has drawn a picture of a panda. They hold it up. Bao tilts their head. The child laughs. So does Bao — in their own way.

Later, when the crowd is gone, a single envelope is left by the glass. Inside is the drawing. On the back is a note: 'Thank you for today. My sister was scared of animals until she met you.' Bao holds the drawing carefully. They look at the empty hallway. And then they do something the keepers have never seen before.

The first snow has fallen. Bao has never seen so much of it. They roll. They slide. They leave panda-shaped prints everywhere. Another panda joins them. They race. They tumble. For a moment they are just two friends in the snow.

When they stop, they sit side by side. The other panda signs something. Bao signs back. The keeper watching from the window does not know sign language, but they know that look. One of the pandas is leaving. The sanctuary is moving them to a new program. This is goodbye. Bao reaches out and takes the other panda's paw. The snow keeps falling.

Bao's favorite keeper has been sad for days. Bao notices. They bring their favorite bamboo shoot and leave it by the keeper's feet. The keeper smiles. They sit with Bao and talk — about life, about change, about things Bao cannot fully understand. But Bao listens.

The next day the keeper is gone. A new keeper comes. They are kind, but they are not the same. Bao waits by the gate every morning. One week later, the old keeper returns — just for a visit. They have a baby with them. They hold the baby up to the glass. Bao presses their paw to the glass from the other side. The baby laughs. So does the keeper. And Bao makes a sound that the new keeper will later describe as the closest thing to a panda saying goodbye.

Bao cannot sleep. The moon is full. They climb to the highest platform in their enclosure and look out at the mountains. Somewhere out there are other pandas. Bao has never met them. They have only heard stories.

That night Bao does something they have never done: they climb the outer wall. Not to escape — the wall is too high, and they know it. They climb until they can see the valley. And there, in the distance, they see a light. A small fire. And around it, shadows that move like pandas. Bao watches until the sun rises. In the morning the keepers find them asleep on the platform. In their paw is a single feather — not from any bird that lives in the sanctuary. No one can explain where it came from.
