Carlos has waited years for this moment. The meeting is in an hour; his presentation is ready. His team has his back. He walks into the conference room and sees the board — and one empty chair where his mentor used to sit.

He delivers the pitch. The room is silent. Then the CEO leans forward and asks the one question Carlos hoped nobody would notice. The numbers on slide seven do not add up.

Carlos hosts the family every Sunday. Today his daughter is bringing someone new — and she has not said much about them. The table is set; the food is ready. The doorbell rings. Carlos opens it and sees a face he has not seen in twenty years.

Dinner begins. The conversation is careful. Then his daughter raises her glass and says she has an announcement. Carlos puts down his fork. So does the guest. They exchange a look that says they both already know.

Carlos has run this route every morning for a decade. Today he is slower; his knee has been talking to him. He rounds the usual corner and finds the path blocked — construction, detour, a sign he cannot read from here. He stops. For the first time in years, he is not sure which way to go.

A young runner slows down beside him and asks if he is okay. Carlos says he is. The runner nods and points to a new path through the park. 'This way. I'll show you.' And something in their tone makes Carlos follow.

Carlos's college friends have organized a reunion. He has not seen most of them in decades. The hotel ballroom is full of gray hair and old stories. He finds his old roommate near the bar. They hug. They talk. Then the roommate says, 'I need to tell you something about that night before graduation.'

Carlos's smile fades. He has wondered about that night for thirty years. The room is loud; nobody is listening. His roommate takes a breath — and the lights go out.

Carlos has always fixed things — cars, appliances, the fence. His neighbor's kid has brought over a bike with a bent wheel. Carlos gets his tools. The kid watches every move. Together they straighten the wheel and tighten the spokes. The kid says thank you and rides off.

Carlos turns back to his garage and sees his own father's old toolbox on the shelf. He has not opened it in years. Today he does. Inside, under the rust and the rags, is an envelope with his name on it. The handwriting is his father's.
