On the far bank, she does not rest. She counts heads, then points to the next stretch of woods. Dawn is still hours away.

The Union army has accepted her as a scout. Harriet moves through the camp at night, gathering what she hears. The raid is coming; the enslaved workers along the river will need warning. She memorizes the map and the timetable.

She delivers the report. The colonel nods. Then he asks if she will lead the boats when they go in. She does not hesitate. Yes.

A packed hall, after the war. Harriet Tubman speaks about the work that remains — freedom without land, without safety, without justice. She does not soften the truth. The audience is silent, then someone stands to applaud. Then the whole room is on its feet.

Afterward, a young woman approaches. She wants to know how to do what Harriet did. Harriet takes her hand. You already are, she says.

Harriet tends the sick and wounded — soldiers, runaways, anyone who needs care. She has no formal training; she has learned from roots and necessity. A young man is dying. She sits with him until he goes. She closes his eyes and moves to the next cot.

Later, someone asks how she keeps going. She looks at the rows of beds. Because they need me to, she says. There is no other answer.
