Poseidon stands at the edge of the abyss. The mortals have angered him — their ships have poisoned his waters, their nets have emptied his seas. He raises his trident. One strike and the coast will fall. Then he hears it: a voice. A child on the shore, calling for a parent lost in the storm he sent. He lowers the trident. The storm was his. The child was not. He turns to the waves. Bring the parent back, he commands. The sea obeys. He does not know that the child will grow up to build the first temple in his name. But that is a story for another age.

For now, the trident stays still. Some angers can wait.

Poseidon and Athena stand before the king. The city will go to whoever gives it the greater gift. Poseidon strikes the rock. Salt water pours forth — a spring, endless and powerful. The crowd gasps. Athena plants an olive tree. The king considers. Water from the sea god — or food, oil, and wood from the goddess. He chooses Athena. Poseidon's rage is instant. He raises the trident. The sea surges toward the city. Then he stops. He looks at the olive tree. He looks at the people. He lets the wave fall. He will never love Athens. But he will not destroy it. Some contests are lost. Some graces are greater than winning. He turns and walks into the sea. The people will tell the story for centuries. They will not tell the part where he wept.

They will not need to. The sea remembers.

Poseidon has been asked to create a gift for the mortals — something that will change the world. He walks into the waves. He gathers foam, salt, and storm. He shapes them with his hands. When he emerges, he holds the first horse. It is wild. It is beautiful. He gives it to the people. They do not know how to tame it. They are afraid. Poseidon smiles. So is the sea. You learn. He leaves them with the horse. It will take generations. But they will learn. And the horse will carry them across the earth the way the waves carry his chariot. He does not say that he made the horse in his own image — strength, fury, and the will to run. The mortals will figure it out. Or they will not. The sea does not explain itself.

It simply moves.

Zeus has sent a message: cease the storms. The mortals have prayed. The gods have voted. Poseidon listens. He looks at the messenger. He looks at the sea. He says: tell my brother that the sea does not vote. It obeys me. The messenger trembles. Poseidon sighs. But tell him also that I will quiet the waves. For now. Not because he commanded it. Because the mortals asked. There is a difference. The messenger runs. Poseidon turns to the water. He speaks in a language only the deep understands. The storms slow. The waves still. On the shore, the mortals fall to their knees. They thank Zeus. Poseidon hears them. He smiles. Let them thank whom they like. The sea knows who answered.

And the sea remembers.

Poseidon's son has sailed into the wrong waters. The mortals have taken him. They mean to sacrifice him. Poseidon feels it — the pull of blood, the cry in the deep. He could drown the island. He could bring the cliffs down. He could leave no one alive. He rises from the waves. The mortals see him. They drop their blades. They fall to their knees. Poseidon looks at his son. He looks at the mortals. He says: you did not know. They shake their heads. He says: now you do. He takes his son. He turns to the sea. As he goes, he says: build an altar. Every ship that passes will leave an offering. Not to me. To the sea. So you remember. They build it. They remember. His son never sails again without a prayer. Poseidon does not say he was afraid. Gods do not say such things. But the sea was cold that day. Colder than it had been in years.

Even the deep can fear.
