Rusty slips through the fence at dusk. The garden is full of ripe vegetables. He has been watching for weeks. He takes one tomato. Then he hears a sound. The farmer is sitting on the porch, watching. Rusty freezes. The farmer does not move. They look at each other. The farmer nods. Rusty takes the tomato and runs. The next night there are two bowls by the fence — one with water, one with scraps. Rusty does not understand. But he drinks. He eats. He comes back the next night. And the next.

One evening the farmer is not on the porch. The bowls are full. Rusty eats. Then he sees the open door of the shed. Inside something is moving. He creeps closer. The farmer is trapped under a fallen shelf. Rusty barks. Nobody comes. He runs to the house. He scratches at the door. The farmer's spouse opens it. Rusty runs back to the shed. They follow. The farmer is freed. After that, the bowls are always full. And sometimes Rusty brings something back — a feather, a shiny stone — and leaves it by the porch. The farmer keeps every one.

Rusty needs to get to the other side. The river is high. The log bridge is slippery. He tries once. He slips. He tries again. Halfway across he sees a cub in the water, struggling. Rusty forgets the crossing. He jumps in. He pushes the cub toward the shore. The current pulls them both. They reach the bank. The cub's mother is there. She growls. Rusty backs away. Then the cub nuzzles his mother. The mother looks at Rusty. She dips her head. Rusty dips his. He crosses the river on the log. Nobody follows. But he knows he did the right thing.

Weeks later Rusty is hurt. A trap has caught his leg. He cannot free himself. He howls. No one comes. Then he hears footsteps. The bear — the cub's mother — appears. She breaks the trap. Rusty limps away. He looks back. The bear is gone. He never sees her again. But he never forgets.

The young foxes gather around Rusty. He is old. He has seen many seasons. They want a story. He tells them about the great hunt, the winter when the snow was deeper than a fox is tall. He tells them about the human who left food when the forest was empty. He tells them about the night he saw the stars fall. The young ones listen. When he is done, one asks if the stories are true. Rusty smiles. He says every story is true for someone.

Later, alone, Rusty looks at the sky. He thinks about the human. He thinks about the bear. He thinks about the stars. He wonders if anyone will tell his story when he is gone. Then he hears a rustle. One of the young foxes has followed him. The young one says, 'I will remember.' Rusty nods. Maybe that is enough.

Rusty finds the pup in the hollow of a tree. It is not a fox. It is a dog — small, lost, crying. Rusty should leave. Foxes and dogs do not mix. But the pup is cold. Rusty curls around it. The pup stops crying. In the morning Rusty leads the pup through the forest. They reach a road. There is a house. Rusty pushes the pup toward the door. The pup whines. Rusty barks once. The door opens. A human appears. The pup runs to them. The human sees Rusty. Rusty turns. He runs back into the trees. He does not look back.

Years later Rusty is old. He is slow. He is hungry. He goes to the edge of the forest. The same house is there. The same human. And beside them, the pup — now a dog — sees Rusty. The dog barks. The human looks. They put a bowl of food by the fence. Rusty approaches. He eats. The dog wags its tail. Rusty finishes. He leaves. But he comes back the next night. And the next. Some bonds never break.

The forest is holding a race. The prize is the best den in the valley. Rusty is fast. So is the hare. So is the owl. They line up. The race begins. Rusty runs. The hare is ahead. The owl flies. Rusty sees a shortcut — through the thorns. He takes it. He is bleeding when he comes out the other side. But he is ahead. He reaches the finish. He wins. The hare is angry. The owl is silent. Rusty looks at the den. It is perfect. Then he looks at the hare's family — crowded in a small burrow. He looks at the owl's nest — exposed to the wind. Rusty walks away from the prize. He says the race was a tie. The hare and the owl stare. Rusty finds a different den. It is smaller. But he sleeps well.

The next season the hare shares food with Rusty when the snow is deep. The owl warns him when the hunter is near. Nobody mentions the race. But they all remember.
