Shadow slips through the garden every night. The neighbors think it is a stray. One family leaves out food. Shadow starts to linger — on the porch, then by the window. The child inside draws pictures of a black cat and leaves them on the sill. Shadow brings a mouse. The family is not sure what to do. They look it up. It says: cats bring gifts when they adopt you.

Shadow is waiting on the mat the next morning. The door opens. The child kneels. Shadow steps inside. From the street, another black cat watches — and then turns and walks away. Shadow has chosen. The other cat was just checking.

From the sill, Shadow sees everything: the mail carrier, the dog walkers, the couple that fights at night. One day a moving truck appears. New people. Shadow watches them unpack. A small box is left on the sidewalk. Shadow has never left the yard. The new person looks kind. Shadow jumps down, crosses the street, and sits on the box. When the person comes out, they stop. They look at Shadow. Shadow looks back. The person takes the box — and Shadow — inside.

That evening Shadow sits in a new window. The old house is empty. Shadow does not look back. Some windows are for watching. This one is for staying.

Every afternoon the same patch of light moves across the floor. Shadow follows it. From the couch to the chair to the rug. The human works at a screen and does not notice. One day the human is sad. Shadow has seen sad before. They climb onto the keyboard. The human sighs. Shadow headbutts their hand. The human scratches Shadow's ears. The sunbeam is on the human's lap now. Shadow curls up in it. The human does not move. They stay there until the light is gone.

From then on, when the human is sad, Shadow finds the sunbeam and sits in it — and waits for the human to come. Sometimes the best gift is a patch of light and a cat who will share it.

Two territories meet in the alley. Shadow's side has the fish shop. The other side has the bakery. Both sides have cats. They have never fought. They have never needed to. Shadow sits on the fence. The other side's cat sits on the dumpster. They have done this for months. One night a strange dog gets loose. It runs into the alley. Both cats freeze. Shadow yowls. The other cat yowls back. They move as one — Shadow from the left, the other from the right. The dog stops. It looks at two sets of eyes in the dark. It backs away. The next day Shadow and the other cat sit in the same spots. Nothing is said. Nothing needs to be.

Some alliances are not spoken. They are just known.

Shadow discovers the mirror. At first they hiss. Then they touch the glass. Then they sit for hours. The human thinks Shadow is vain. Shadow is not. Shadow is learning. In the reflection there is another black cat. Same eyes. Same tail. Shadow moves; the other moves. Shadow has never had a double. One day Shadow brings a toy to the mirror. They push it toward the glass. The reflection pushes back. Shadow drops the toy and walks away. The human finds Shadow later, curled in a box. Shadow is not sad. Shadow has met the only other cat who understands. They will never speak. But they know.

From then on Shadow visits the mirror once a day. Just to sit. Just to be seen. Some friendships are silent.
